Chapter 15 — Auditability


A system that cannot explain what it did cannot be trusted with autonomy.


Auditability is not about surveillance.

It is about accountability, reconstruction, and restraint.

Auditability Is Not Logging


Most systems log events. Few systems are auditable.

triggers escalation when thresholds are crossed


Sentinel does not enforce permissions.

Sentinel does not block actions directly.

Sentinel observes and reports.


This separation prevents enforcement from becoming blind to its own failures.


Separation Prevents Self-Justifying Systems


A system that enforces and observes through the same mechanism risks self-justification.


If enforcement logic is flawed, observation must be able to detect that flaw. If observation logic fails, enforcement must remain intact.


By separating Guardian and Sentinel:
